Tony went back to the condo and got onto his computer for a while. He needed some raw data, and the only way he could find that was to search through a pile of junk.

Where the hell was Caleb Hatfield? And what was Caleb up to? Tony checked into his friend’s credit card history, but he had not used any of his cards recently. He thought about how Bob McCallum liked to save the Bureau money by staying at military bases close to his investigations. It was possible that Caleb had simply checked into a Navy Lodge somewhere and was hanging out. As a retired officer, he had full base privileges. So he searched the military lodging facilities around the Sound. Nothing. He extended the search nationwide, for all military services. Still nothing. Then he checked his ATM card. Bingo. Although he had checked on this the day after he had talked with Mary and got all of the financial information on her and Caleb’s accounts, this was his first hit. Caleb must have been running low. He had taken out two hundred bucks from an ATM in Silverdale around midnight last night. Just for the hell of it, Tony tried calling Caleb’s cell phone, and, like the dozens of other times he had tried, the call went directly to voice mail.

Tony hurried out to his truck and drove toward Port Orchard. It was turning out to be the best day since his arrival in Kitsap County. He finally had a lead and the weather was cooperating.

About forty-five minutes later, he pulled into Caleb and Mary’s driveway. The garage door was up, so he knew Mary was home.

She answered the door wearing a matching pink sweats top and bottom. Nike. But the only working out she had been doing was lifting her glass to her mouth. She let him in and led him to the kitchen. From there Tony had a nice view of the harbor and the Navy ships across the bay.

“I just made a fresh pot of coffee,” Mary said. “You like a cup? It’s hazelnut.” She sounded more animated than any other time since Tony arrived.

“Sure.”

She poured them both a cup, and then she took a seat at the kitchen table to Tony’s left, her hand wrapped around the coffee cup shaking slightly.

“Any news?” she asked.

“I tried calling, but there was no answer this morning. I figured you went to church.”

She got a good laugh at that. “Yeah, I would have fit right in there this morning.”

There was an unpleasant calm as they both fought for words. Tony broke the silence, “He’s still in the area,” he told her. “He used an ATM in Silverdale last night to take out two hundred bucks.”

She nodded. “That’s good.”

There was no way to sugar-coat what he was about to ask her, so he just pushed forward. “Tell me what’s really going on here, Mary.” His voice came across more harsh than he would have liked, but he thought he got his point across.
